How to Update Nexus 4 to Stock Rooted and De-Odexed Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean ROM

Step 1: Connect your phone to the computer and transfer the downloaded ROM zip file to the phone's SD card

Step 2: Power off the Nexus 4 and boot into recovery mode. To do so, press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons together until the green Android icon pops-up with the letters Start at the top right. Now, hit the volume up key twice to highlight the Recovery Mode option, and press the Power key to select it and boot into TWRP.

Step 3: In recovery, first take a full Nandroid backup of your current ROM, so that you can restore the original ROM later, if something goes wrong with the new ROM. To take a backup, click Backup and make sure the System, Data and Boot box options are checked. Then, slide the blue circle button at the bottom to the right to begin data backup of your current ROM. Once backup is done, return to the main menu by tapping the home button at the bottom left of the screen.

Step 4: Return to the Main menu, click Wipe, then choose Factory Reset and confirm wipe on next screen. Now, choose Cache from the Wipe menu and confirm wipe on next screen. Once done, Tap Dalvik Cache and again confirm the action on next screen. Once done, hit the back button to return to the main menu.

Step 5: In the main menu, tap Install, and on the next screen browse to the mako_4.2.1_Deodexed.zip file that you copied to your phone in Step 5, and select it. Slide the blue circle on the next screen to begin installation.

Step 6: The Stock Rooted and De-Odexed Android 4.2.1 JOP40D ROM will now begin installing. Wait until the installation completes, and then tap Reboot button on the TWRP screen, and then hit System to reboot your Nexus 4 into the new OS.

Step 7: The first boot may be time consuming, so leave it alone while the OS gets updated and your phone boots up completely.

JOP40D ROM based Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean update is now successfully installed on your Nexus 4. Go to Settings > About Phone to verify the firmware version installed.
