Sir Alex Ferguson is planning a highly unlikely "swoop" for Newcastle tearaway Joey Barton as United struggle to identify a replacement for Paul Scholes, according to the Sunday Times.

In London, walking Emirates punch-line Emmanuel Eboue is the subject of a £4m offer from Turkish side Galatasary. Arsenal will head back to Goodison Park with a darn sight more than £12m as they continue their quest to sign Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka, having already had one bid turned down.

Staying in north London, Arsene Wenger is set to renew his interest in Anderlecht striker Romelu Lukaku despite Chelsea remaining firm favourites to land the powerful 18-year-old. Wenger is also interested in Villarreal winger Santi Cazorla but will have to "battle" Malaga for the player's signature.

Chelsea are interested in Palermo midfielder Javier Pastore but Roma are not interested in the talented Argentine, depite reports to the contrary. Sporting director Walter Sabatini told Corriere dello Sport - via ESPN Soccer - "He's a very special player, but he will not move to Roma this summer," Sabatini said. "I have already said it before that Roma have made a big coup on the transfer market. [Erik] Lamela can do for Roma what Pastore has done for Palermo in the past two seasons."

Finally, Chelsea will "tempt Tottenham's resolve" with a £27m plus Daniel Sturridge offer for Croatian playmaker Luka Modric.
