Following a successful fan-led campaign, MAC Cosmetics is set to release a makeup collection in honour of late R'n'B singer Aaliyah. The beauty giant announced on Thursday (24 August) that a limited edition One In A Million makeup line was finally on its way.

"Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R'n'B music and film inspires us all," the company said in a statement.

"Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the MAC Aaliyah collection. You made it happen!"

Aaliyah died at the age of 22 in August 2001, when her plane came down shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas. As influential now as she was before her death, her 1996 album, One In A Million, and her self-titled third album, released a month before the fatal plane crash, have sold over 13 million copies.

Dedicated fan Jennifer Risinger was behind the petition, which urged MAC to make the posthumous tribute. The petition, launched in 2015, has 26,182 supporters and counting.

"Aaliyah stands for M.A.C.'s mission of 'All ages, All races, All sexes.' She was a risk taker, innovator, edgy, street but sweet, & R and B's Princess," Risinger wrote at the time.

"She continues to influence today's mainstream artist & people around the world still love and celebrate her life and music every year... Our ‪mission‬ is simple, we want her legacy to continue and be reintroduced through a collection with M.A.C. Cosmetics."

Celebrities like Missy Elliot showed their support for the campaign by retweeting the hashtag #AaliyahforMAC.

Although the collection won't be unveiled until summer 2018, fans could contain their excitement. "This is beyond amazing!!!!" one person said while another added: "Amazing! I'm so excited for this!!!! 16 years and her legacy still lives on!!! So proud to be an aaliyah fan right now!"

Risinger welcomed the news with an impassioned message on her Aaliyah For MAC Twitter page, which read: "Team #Aaliyahformac WE DID THIS! @AaliyahHaughton is getting her @MACcosmetics COLLECTION! Summer 2018! #Aaliyah #maccosmetics #makeup"

The Aaliyah collection comes hot on the heels of MAC honouring beloved Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla with a 13-product collection inspired by her favorite looks in 2016.
