Two teenagers injured in the Alton Towers roller coaster crash are believed to be Joe Pugh, 18, and Leah Washington, 17.

The young couple were reportedly on a date when they suffered serious leg wounds along with two others while on the Staffordshire theme park's The Smiler ride.

The extent of the pair's injuries have not yet emerged but both have been kept in hospital, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported.

Joe, from Barnsley South Yorkshire is a student at the University of Huddersfield and works as a bartender at the Oak's working men's club in Barnsley.

A statement posted on the Barnsley club's Facebook page said: "We at the Oaks WMC would like to extend our prayers and best wishes in the speedy recovery of our barman Joe Pugh and his girlfriend Leah Washington."

Sixteen thrill seekers were on board the Alton Tower's ride when one moving carriage crashed into stationary one shortly after 2pm on 2 June.

A witness to the accident tweeted: "Just been a big accident at Alton Towers down to human error, people unconscious, blood everywhere, faces smashed in and knocked out. They sent out a test cart on the smiler and then one with customers and they crashed."
