However, the 28-year-old made no mistake and won the third and final set, winning the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Murray will be looking for a straight-set victory when he faces another Frenchman on Thursday.

Paire will enjoy the support of home fans when he takes on the two-time Grand Slam winner. He knocked out Joao Sousa in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to make it to the third round of the tournament.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is out of the Monte Carlo Masters after his defeat to 22-year-old Jiri Vesely. Paire will be hoping for another upset when he faces Murray.
