Overview

World number two Andy Murray has publicly stated that he wants to become the top ranked tennis player in the world and he is keeping pace with Novak Djokovic by cruising past his opponents to reach the quarter-final stage at Shanghai.

A two-time winner, the Scot beat Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-2 and Lucas Pouille 6-1, 6-3 in what started out as a close contest but by the end the gulf in class between Murray and his opponents was visible. Despite the hectic season that the Scot has had he is the definite favourite to not only win this contest but also the tournament in China.

Belgium's David Goffin has had a decent season so far reaching the semi-finals of the Indian Wells, the Miami Open while also progressing to the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters and 2016 US Open. Since then he has struggled to maintain that form and intensity but has found his feet once again in the courts of Shanghai.

Goffin comes into this clash after beating Juan Martin del Potro (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), Benoit Paire (6-1, 7-6) and Gael Monfils (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) who are impressive players themselves. Despite him beating such high-profile opponents, it is unlikely that Goffin would cause an upset come 14 October.
