Overview

Murray has the chance to create history when he takes to the court on 14 August, as he attempts to become the first player to win back-to-back Olympic single titles having already won the gold in London four years ago.

The World No 2 comes into this clash after cruising past Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final, the highlight of the match being an extraordinary 23-shot rally to set up his third match point which he duly converted.

Murray will also be fresh on Sunday, considering he needed just 80 minutes to thrash Nishikori and is the favourite to emerge victorious in the final.

Del Potro, has created shockwaves at Rio, beating superstars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on the way to the final. Del Potro who came into the tournament on the back of an injury-plagued couple of years was not expected to move past the first round, but has defied expectations to become the crowd favourite heading into the clash.

The Argentinian who beat Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the semi-final, was on the court for three hours and eight minutes which will affect him considering he is just returning from injury. He is also at a disadvantage when it comes to head-to-head between the two, with Murray winning five games compared to two wins for del Potro.

The unseeded World No 141 is not expected to cause an upset on Sunday, but considering he has already slayed two giants of the game, Murray cannot take del Potro lightly.
