Overview

Murray will look to win a second consecutive Madrid Open title when he takes on Czech Republic's Berdych in the quarter-finals on Friday. Despite not being in the best of form, the world number two cruised past Gilles Simon in the third round, beating him 6-4, 6-2.

The 2016 season has not been a good one for Murray, with his performance in the Australian Open and his exploit in the Davis Cup for Great Britain being the only positive points so far. He will go into this clash as the definite favourite as he aims to win his first title of the year.

His opponent Berdych is coming off an excellent 2015, a year which saw him win in China and Stockholm as well as reach five ATP World Tour finals. The big-hitting Czech has now reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open for six consecutive years, with his best finish coming in 2012, when he finished as a runner-up to Roger Federer.

The world number eight is yet to drop a set so far in the tournament and his big serve and power off the ground gives him a distinct advantage over his opponent.
