It has been 10 years since married couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were last seen on screen together but they have finally been pictured in their upcoming movie, By The Sea for the first time.

In the promo photos, the Mr and Mrs Smith stars can be seen sharing an emotional embrace as a distraught Jolie, 39, cries, while another image shows the actors sitting apart from each other on a bed.

The Universal Pictures-produced film will focus on the turbulent marriage of a writer named Roland, played by Pitt, and his wife Vanessa, portrayed by Jolie, as they live in a French seaside resort in the 1970s.

The American expats are struggling to adjust to their new life abroad, a recent loss, keeping their marriage on track and getting to know their new neighbours, played by Niels Arestrup and Richard Bohringer.

In a statement, Maleficent actress Jolie said of the project: "This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance. It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented cast and crew."

By The Sea has been written and directed by the mother-of-six and is the first time she and her 51-year-old husband have co-starred in a film since the famous 2005 action drama.

The upcoming movie will follow on from Jolie's critically-acclaimed directorial debut, Unbroken, which received an Oscar nomination in February.

Praising the married couple's work together in By The Sea, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley said: "Angie and Brad have created an intimate gem of a film that will surprise people and delivers an experience they might not expect from them."

The film is set to hit cinemas both domestically and internationally on 13 November and Deadline hints that this may be a strategic move so that it is eligible for nomination during awards season.
