There are several Android-based tablets in the market today. However, only a few seem capable of standing up to Apple's iPad - one of these would appear to be Motorola's Xoom 2.

The Xoom 2 was released on 3 November, following the success of the Xoom tablet, the company's first device to run the Honeycomb OS.

Meanwhile, Apple announced the third iteration of their tablet series - the new iPad - on 7 March.

Display- The new iPad features a 9.7-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen multi-touch, high resolution Retina Display along with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology. The resolution of the display is 2048x1536 pixels. The display moreover features fingerprint-resistance oleophobic coating.

The Motorola Xoom 2 has a 10.1-inch TFT IPS capacitive touch screen display with a resolution of 1280x800pixels. It is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

Operating System- The new iPad will run on the iOS 5.1. A re-designed camera app with video stabilization technology, the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream, support for dictation in English, French, German and Japanese and personal Wi-Fi hotspots are few of the key features of the iPad.

The Xoom 2 runs with Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

Processor- The new iPad is powered by a dual-core Apple A5X custom-designed chip with quad-core graphics. The Xoom 2 is powered with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor.

Dimension and Weight- The new iPad Wi-Fi model measures 241.2x185.7x9.4mm and weighs 652g; the Wi-Fi+4G iPad model is 241.2x185.7x9.4mm and weighs 662g.

The Xoom 2 measures 253.9x173.6x8.80mm and weighs 603g.

Connectivity - The new iPad offers Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth version 4.0. The Wi-Fi+4G model can run on both AT&T and Verizon networks and offers Long Term Evolution (LTE) connectivity.

The Xoom 2 offers Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR and also offers HDMI and MicroUSB ports.

Battery Life - Both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+4G models of the new iPad feature a built-in 42.5 watt-hour rechargeable Lithium-Polymer battery which can run for up to 10 hours. The battery can be charged via a power adapter or a USB cable linked to a computer.

The Xoom 2 runs with a 7000mAh Li-Ion battery which can go up to 10 hours with browsing over Wi-Fi and video playback.

Storage - The new iPad comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions. The Xoom 2 has 16GB and 32GB models.

Price- The new iPad Wi-Fi model is available at a retail price of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi+4G model is available at a retail price of $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB.

Xoom 2 is available at a price of approximately $600.

Camera- The new iPad sports a 5 megapixel iSight camera with Autofocus, Tap-to-Focus and Face Detection for still images. It can record videos in HD 1080p and up to 30 frames per second with audio. It also has a Face Time camera with VGA-quality photos and video recording at up to 30 frames per second.

The Xoom 2 sports a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and Autofocus. It also has a front-facing secondary camera of 1.3 megapixels and can also capture video in 1080p.
