The new year is upon us and for a host of Premier League footballers this signals just six months until their contracts expire. For some it's a time of worry as they consider their future within the game, while for others it represents the chance of securing regular first team football.

We all know about the high profile cases such as Theo Walcott at Arsenal, Ashley Cole at Chelsea and Rio Ferdinand at Manchester United, but delve a little deeper and you will find that there is a vast array of players just waiting to be snapped up in the summer.

In fact, there are so many players to choose from that we decided to name an entire 23-man squad to showcase the talent that is available.

Below are what we believe to be the best players available on a free in June...

Goalkeepers

Lukasz Fabianski (Arsenal) Jussi Jasskelainen (West Ham) Boaz Myhill (West Brom)

Defenders

Ashley Cole (Chelsea) Rio Ferdiand (Manchester United) Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) Winston Reid (West Ham) Danny Simpson (Newcastle) Sylvain Distin (Everton) Brade Hangeland (Fulham) Kolo Toure (Manchester City)

Midfielders

Frank Lampard (Chelsea) Florent Malouda (Chelsea) Emmanuel Frimpong (Arsenal) Paul Scholes (Manchester United) Ryan Giggs (Manchester United) Zoltan Gera (West Brom) Damien Duff (Fulham)

Forwards

Theo Walcott (Arsenal) Carlton Cole (West Ham) Michael Owen (Stoke) Franco Di Santo (Wigan) Andrey Arshavin (Arsenal)

In total there are some 96 Premier League players who will be out of work in the summer unless they find another club or are rewarded with a new contract and there are some decent names who didn't even make this list.

Surely the likes of Phillippe Senderos, Chris Brunt and Maynor Figueroa will have no problems finding a new employer, while the same can be said of veteran defenders Phil Neville, William Gallas and Richard Dunne.
