Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is pleased with the way his side have fought back to claim a Champions League spot for next season and has hailed it as the most remarkable turnaround he has seen in his 16 years at the club.

The Gunners were struggling badly at the start of the season and, at a point, were a dismal 15th in the league, with only seven points from seven games. However, a spectacular recent run of nine wins in 10 games has seen them leapfrog rivals Tottenham (whom they trailed by eight points at the start of the year), Chelsea and Newcastle in the race for the last automatic Champions League spot.

"Considering where we were before Christmas, we have improved a lot. Maybe it is the most remarkable turnaround I have seen here," the Daily Mail quoted the manager as saying and adding, "But the spirit was always good and we have been very consistent for the past couple of months when we have shown a lot of quality as well."

In fact, just before half-time in the north London derby at the Emirates, Arsenal were in deep trouble - they were facing a two-goal deficit and 13-point gap to Tottenham in third. However, with the dramatic change of fortunes the Gunners are now five points ahead of Spurs.

Nevertheless,Wenger says Arsenal should not get carried away by their current form and has warned his side against complacency ahead of the next match against relegation battling Wigan Athletic, who pulled off a huge upset on Wednesday with a win over league leaders Manchester United.

"We will be cautious because we have suffered a lot this year and I don't know how many points it will take to make sure (of a Champions League spot). Other teams have been where we are now and the situation has changed and maybe that will help us to keep our feet on the ground. All I will say is let's see where we are at the end of the season and I am just focusing on the next game. We know it will be another battle against Wigan, another team who are fighting not to go down like Wolves are and who had a great result against Manchester United," the Frenchman added.
