Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere hopes to improve his goal tally in the coming seasons to reach double figures but claims he is unlikely to replicate the figures of other top midfielders such as Manchester City star Frank Lampard or Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The Gunners player has put behind him the injury concerns that hampered his development in recent seasons but he is still struggling when it comes to improving his goal tally.

Wilshere scored three Premier League goals during the whole of last season, while he has only managed to net one (against Manchester City) in seven Premier League appearances during the current campaign.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny recently said Wilshere "will become a complete player if he can just add a few more goals to his game".

When asked whether Wilshere agreed with his teammate, the midfielder said: "I've said before that my goalscoring record has never been good enough and that I always want to add more goals.

"You look at the top midfielders in the world like Lampard and Gerrard who were getting 15 or 20 goals a season back in their day," he said to Arsenal's official website.

"I'm not saying I can get that many because they were specialists at that, but I could definitely get into double figures."

The 22-year-old English international was considered one of the most promising footballers in the country when Arsene Wenger handed the then Arsenal academy player his debut at the age of 16.

But even though a number of injuries slowed his progress in past seasons, Wilshere believes he is back to his best and ready to prove he still can become into a top-class star.

"I've been very pleased. I said at the start of the season that it was going to take me a few games to come back to the level I was at. When you miss time at this level you lose a bit of pace, a bit of form and it takes you time to get back," he said.

"I'm very pleased. The main thing that got me back is my pride. I never wanted to stop - I was never satisfied with the level I was playing at. I always knew that I could come back to a level that I wanted to be at and be able to dominate games. I'm happy at the moment but I still think I can do a little bit better."
