Jason Momoa as Aquaman
Director James Wan has hinted that he will add a 'horror element' to his take on Aquaman Warner Bros Pictures / YouTube

Aquaman fans have a reason to rejoice as a leaked set image shows Jason Momoa and Amber Heard busy filming for the upcoming DC superhero movie. The actor plays Arthur Curry aka the King of Atlantis and Heard plays his wife Mera in the highly-anticipated film.

In the picture, Heard looks flawless as the princess of the underwater kingdom of Xebel as she chats with the alter ego of Aquaman. The context of the particular scene, however, is still unknown. The website, Comic Book, speculates that it is a flashback sequence that "takes place before the events of this fall's Justice League."

The plot of the film is still a mystery. According to fans, the film might follow the comic book where Mera, "possesses enhanced strength, durability and the ability to bend water," and is trained to assassin the King of Atlantis to avenge the exile of her people and in order to do so she will enchant Arthur.

However, the unexpected happens and the fiery red-haired princess falls in love with her nemesis and eventually marries to become the Queen of Atlantis. In the leaked image, Heard is in her aquatic avatar while Momoa was dressed as his human self Arthur.

The former Game Of Thrones actor has previously teased that the standalone film will focus on the trident-wielding aquatic superhero's struggle to balance his life as a normal human on Earth and as the King of Seven Seas as he will feel like an "outsider" in both the worlds.

"The guy was never really accepted on land, and he was never really accepted in Atlantis. He's a half-breed. But he's the best of both worlds. He just doesn't know how to handle his powers. So it's kind of a coming of age for a young man to a man, or a man to a king. He's lost a lot of things and he's got to cope. He's an outsider."

Directed by James Wan, the aqua-adventure saga is scheduled to hit theatres in 2018, but before that fans will get to see their favourite Aquaman in the upcoming superhero assemble film, Justice League that will premier in November this year.
