According to estimates over 150,000 Londoners did not turn up for work on Wednesday. The financial impact of the tube strike on businesses in London is expected to be severe.

The west end stores are estimated to have lost £25 million due to 100,000 shoppers avoiding the capital during the strike. Restaurants and pubs in Central London also took a severe hit as Londoners were keen to reach home early and avoid leisure activities such as shopping, eating and drinking.

Dr Helen Hill Policy Director at the LCCI said: "A full 48 hours of industrial action could cost the capital up to £100 million in lost productivity. While most Londoners are worried about keeping their jobs and making ends meet in the recession, RMT members are asking for more money for less work."

"Ending the strike 24 hours early will allow millions of Londoners to avoid another miserable commute, will halve the strike's £100m cost to the London economy and help the RMT avoid further embarrassment and public hostility."

"The time has come for the RMT to admit defeat and call off this strike."

Calling for a strike during the deepest recession since the great depression have left RMT out in the cold. Londoners have also vented their furry towards the tube strike calling it totally "unnecessary".

The Mayor of London severely criticised the RMT's stand on the tube strike and called it as one of the "most insensitive tube strikes that have been ever held in the city".
