Air France 447: Recovery of all bodies unlikely

17 June 2009 @ 05:43 pm BST

The French and Brazilian search and recovery team have recovered 50 bodies until now from the ill fated Air France flight 447 that went down in Atlantic Ocean on its way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. There are fears that the many of the remaining bodies of the passengers may never be recovered and could be lost in the vast and turbulent Atlantic Ocean.

The hunt for the passenger's bodies is underway for well over two weeks and only 50 bodies have been recovered.

The recovered bodies were sent to the nearest Brazilian mainland city of Recife where detailed identification process and autopsies are being carried out.

In today's press briefing, the director of Investigation and Analysis Bureau (BEA), Paul-Louis Arslanian, said it is "virtually certain" that the entire aircraft parts will never be recovered.

BEA is the French organisation leading the technical enquiry into the Air France flight 447 crash.

"All the bodies which are or will be found will be recovered, but I do not know how many. I cannot say to you," Arslanian said.

Reports have emerged that the Brazilian authorities have denied access to the French coroners from taking part in the autopsies of the dead passengers. "I'm not upset, but I'm not happy," said Arslanian.

This has prevented the French investigators from having access to valuable information that can advance the investigation.

Meanwhile, the hunt for the black box is intensifying with the French Submarine and two tug boats equipped with powerful U.S. underwater listening device working flat out in the quest for the black box.
