Iran footballers protest against Ahmadinejad

17 June 2009 @ 03:19 pm BST

Demonstrators against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have gained some extra support from members of the Iranian football team.

Iran is currently gripped by a political crisis as hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest against Mr Ahmadinejad's re-election in last Friday's presidential election.

The regime has cracked down on foreign journalists and opposition figures. Foreign journalists have had strong reporting restrictions placed on them whilst a number of figures critical to the regime have been arrested.

Iran's football team is currently in Seoul for a crucial world cup qualifier game against South Korea. A number of Iranian players risked the wrath of the authorities by wearing green armbands, in what is believed to have been a show of support for presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

The players did not wear the armbands in the second half of the match, possibly, according to some reports, because the Iranian football federation issued orders for them to be removed.

Iranian football fans at the match also unfurled banners opposing President Ahmadinejad

The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
