Michael Jackson memorial service could be at Staples Centre or LA Memorial Coliseum

02 July 2009 @ 11:05 am BST

Michael Jackson's public memorial service could be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum or the Staples Centre in order to accommodate the huge numbers of people expected to come for the event.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum played host to the Olympics in 1984 and can hold as many as 92,000 people, whist the Staples Centre, home of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, can hold 20,000 people.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the Jackson family have spoken with them and the California Highway Patrol about possible arrangements to be made in the city for the day of the funeral.

The Staples Centre is owned by AEG Live, the group which was promoting Michael Jackson's final "This Is It" tour in London at the O2. No arrangements have yet been confirmed as to when and where Mr Jackson's memorial will be held.

The final resting place of Michael Jackson is also yet to be revealed. One possible spot is the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where stars such as Humprey Bogart and Clark Gable are buried. One other possible site is the singer's Neverland ranch, which could become a Graceland-style permanent memorial to Mr Jackson.
