Telefonica may bid for T-Mobile UK

02 July 2009 @ 12:24 am BST

LONDON - Spain's Telefonica is looking at the case for buying T-Mobile UK, the mobile phone operator owned by Deutsche Telekom, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the situation.

The paper said on Thursday that Telefonica has taken the step partly because its British arm O2 could lose its top spot in the UK mobile phone market if Vodafone buys T-Mobile UK, as was reported earlier this week.

Deutsche Telekom is looking at all options for its UK arm but a source told Reuters on Monday that no decision was imminent.

Telefonica's O2 was not immediately available to comment on Thursday.
