09 July 2009 @ 02:51 pm BST

The London postal workers are on a three day strike over jobs cuts, pay and conditions.

The strike is spread across three sectors of the postal operation. On Thursday the distribution and logistics staff are on strike and the mail centres will take part in the strike.

Royal Mail confirmed that collections and deliveries will take place in all areas of London on Thursday. However, Royal Mail warned that "deliveries and collection times may be slightly later than usual because of larger than usual volumes of mail being handled."

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that Royal Mail was "the biggest block to modernisation" as it announced the strike.

But the Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson accused the CWU of blocking modernisation in Royal Mail.

Royal Mail has condemned the CWU three day strike action in London over what it calls "essential changes" that were already agreed by the union. These changes are being implemented in Royal Mail through out UK said a statement by Royal Mail.

The statement further added: "Customers will not understand how the union can claim to support modernisation but then announce strike action to halt existing efforts to modernise Royal Mail in London."
