Shootout: Palm Pre versus iPhone 3GS and the Winner is...

London - Palm Pre, billed as the closest rival to Apple Inc.'s latest iPhone – iPhone 3GS - has finally landed in the UK, triggering a debate over which is the smarter of the two smartphones. So who has emerged the winner?

Palm Pre
1 of 1

First, let us do away with the similarities. Like the iPhone, external controls are kept to a minimum on the Pre. On the left side, it has volume up/down buttons, and a mute switch on the top, next to the on/off button while on the right side, it has a small flap covering the microUSB connector, and a single centre button is located beneath the screen.

In terms of specifications, Palm Pre is similar to iPhone - it is a quad-band GSM phone with 3G/HSDPA support at up to 3.6Mbit/s and is equipped with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi for internet access. It also has Bluetooth support for wireless headsets. It boasts of a 3.1-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 480 resolution. It also has GPS capability for location-based services, such as the built-in Google Maps, and, like the iPhone, an accelerometer that senses if you rotate the device and changes the display to match.

However, this is where the similarities end.

Though weight-wise, Palm Pre and iPhone weigh almost the same (135gm), size-wise Palm Pre is slightly smaller in length and breadth (100.5mmx59.5mm) but bigger in terms of thickness (16.95mm as against iPhone's 12.3mm).

However, Palm Pre's more rounded shape (the phone has the look and feel of a pebble with rounded corners) gives it a sleeker look and a more comfortable fit in the hand.

Blah blah blah same tired arguments. Palm Pre's multitasking abilities and far superior OS keep getting overlooked. Why? Because of Apple's thousands of useless apps? No doubt the Pre's apps are a little thin at the moment, but they are growing exponentially... And even WITHOUT these apps, I'm already far more productive on my Pre than I ever was on my iPhone after 1.5 yrs of ownership. You have a legitimate point about the Pre's memory disadvantage, though. Luckily Palm is releasing a larger capacity Pre soon, and it's even rumored to have an expandable storage slot. Let's hope those rumors are true... Iin closing, people really need to check this phone out. They are doing themselves a seroious disservice if they just spring for the iPhone.

The reason we have the iphone is because we DO NOT WANT a keyboard from 1876. No one is getting pre's in NYC. Like nobody. The iPhone is crushing it. They are not even in the same world.

This badly written piece is non other than polemic in favour of the Pre. Not good; I suggest you find a better author in future who is willing to some research - again and again the facts as presented are simply wrong.

For me, another big plus of the iphone over the Pre, is Iphone's visual voicemail. It's fabulous for both business and personal calls.

The iPhone would be the best phone ever, if it weren't on AT&T. AT&T is the WORST cellular carrier on earth. Worse than Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodafone, and even Revol. AT&T renders the iPhone unusable in the US. AT&T=Epic Fail.

Interesting article. Palm Pre has its advantages, however iPhone definitely has something special to it that attracts customers. Will be very interesting to see how consumers react when Palm Pre is launched.
