Smartphone Wars: Motorola Droid versus Apple iPhone (2)

London - In our previous article Smartphone Wars: Motorola Droid versus Apple iPhone (1) we saw Motorola Droid taking on Apple iPhone for the coveted title of 'the smartest smartphone ever to be launched.' Droid, which comes with a bigger multi-touch screen, better camera and boasts of a powerful mobile processor and the latest Google Android platform (2.0), appears to pose a serious challenge to iPhone's dominance in the smartphone segment.

However, Droid is not invincible – it has its own flaws which iPhone could look to exploit.

For instance, unlike iPhone, Droid reportedly does not support zoom in and zoom out gestures (i.e. no pinching - you need to double tap to zoom in and zoom out). Droid also reportedly will not come installed with Flash 10 (though Droid promises the "greatest web experience on the phone" and it has been designed to support Flash 10).

Also one must not forget that Google has not entirely addressed the range of bugs and fixes that have dogged Android.

Other letdowns include its bulkiness (Droid's heavy - it measures 2.4x4.6x0.5 inches and weighs 6 oz - and not quite pocket-sized) and its hard-to-type keyboard (Droid's keys are flat and shallow and difficult to muster). However, it may be noted that Droid also offers virtual keyboard (which, however, is fantastically responsive with very little input error).

Now for the billion dollar question - can Droid take the fight to iPhone or will it end up as another statistic?

A Motorola source claims Google has a direct hand in the designing and making of Droid but the news is yet to be confirmed.

However, if the report is true, Droid will not just be any smartphone because the best brains in Google must have gone into making it.

And, with Google brains wired into Droid, it is Motorola's best bet in taking a shot at the title of the smartest smartphone ever to be launched.

But iPhone's no pushover. iPhone scores over Droid in terms of onboard memory - unlike Droid, which comes shipped with 512MB storage and a 16GB microSD card, iPhone 3GS (the latest model of iPhone) comes in two variant - 16GB and 32GB storage. This is a big plus for iPhone though Droid can accept up to 32GB cards.

Besides, the apps available with Droid are much less when compared to those of iPhone. While Apple Inc. offers iPhone users access to its legendary AppStore where the users can find over 90,000 games and applications, both for free and a small cost, the Google-based Android Store currently has only around 10,000 apps.

The Droid actually ships with a 16GB MicroSD card and is expandable to 32GB. Basically same as the iPhone.

Big issue with the Droid in the USA: Verizon uses CDMA for it's network, which only allows voice or data, not both voice and data that you see with GSM.

OT, I know, but I'm really suprised at the suggestion that the iPhones virtual keyboard is "impossible" to use. When I first got my iPhone, that was my biggest worry, that my oversized thumbs would never be able to use the keyboard in portrait mode, but now I'm so sold on it, that a physical keyboard, to me, is a negative, rather than a positive.

Would the Droid work in other countries?

The Droid SD card can only handle videos and music and nothing else. You can't install apps on the sd card. So I think the Iphone 16gb and 32gb is a huge plus for the iPhone.

Really? You cannot install apps on the sd card? Wow! I was thinking of buying a Droid but now I think I'll stick to iPhone instead

A generation will pass before Motorola, Palm, HTC or Blackberry can come up with a device worthy enough to challenge the iPhone.

can Motorola's Sanjay Jha take on Apple's Steve Jobs? I think not. Can the Droid take on the iPhone? I think not.

You're wrong. Of course you can store apps on the SD card. Quit being an apple fanboy and get your facts right
