London - Marvel Comics, the publisher of comic superheroes such as Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Captain America and X-Men, has stolen a march over its rival DC Comics by partnering with some independent developers to create apps that will allow iPhone users to purchase and download their comic titles online and read them on their smartphones.

The titles available range from the classic runs and the more recent releases of Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America and Marvel Zombies.
According to Marvel's executive vice president of digital media, Ira Rubenstein, the company decided to partner with several developers and not just one "to give the consumers the choice to decide what's best for them."
"Each software has a world of difference, and each company has a different approach. By going with multiple companies, we're letting the consumer decide," Rubenstein said.
The move underscores the plan of Disney, which bought Marvel Comics in August for $4 billion, to bring comics to the mobile phones and make them accessible to a larger community of people.
In 2007, Marvel Comics had launched digital versions of its comic titles which could be read online for free as well as for a small subscription fee (check out http://www.marvel.com/digitalcomics/).
