LONDON - Women heading out for parties over Christmas were warned by police chiefs on Monday not to leave themselves vulnerable to rapists by drinking too much.

The Association of Chief Police Officers launched a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the increased risk of sex attacks over the festive period when more people are out drinking heavily.
"A large proportion of reported rape cases feature alcohol as a factor -- whether it is consumed by the victim or the offender," said Dave Whatton, ACPO's lead on rape issues.
"The Christmas party season is obviously a key concern for us which is why we have embarked on this awareness campaign."
The "Rape: short word, long sentence" ad campaign advises women to "let your hair down, not your guard down," while reminding men on the need to seek consent for sex.
"Ultimately we want to prevent rape from occurring in the first pace, by arming potential victims with key advice on how to keep themselves safe," Whatton said.
