Google Chrome-based tablet may end Apple iPad's honeymoon

London - Apple Inc.'s honeymoon with its "latest creation," the iPad, may be shortlived as technology rival Google could be planning to release its own tablet PC soon, industry watchers have claimed.

Two days before Apple revealed its iPad, a 9.7-inch touchscreen-based mobile computing device to the world, Google posted up images and video of Google tablet gesture control capabilities on the official Chromium website, the open source project behind the Google Chrome browser and Google Chrome OS, for developers to consider.

One mock-up video suggested that the Google tablet is capable of multitasking, something the iPad can't do.

"You may have seen our Chrome OS tablet concepts from last Monday; in the video, some floating hands interact with a touch surface," Google Chrome lead designer Glen Murphy wrote in a personal blog post.

"We only used one hand image instead of showing the full range of gestures, but I did make a larger set," Murphy said.

However, the website only focused on Chrome OS software and did not indicate whether Google would make its own tablet or opt to let others tend to the hardware.

But, we won't be surprised if Google actually does launch its very own tablet in the near future, just as it launched its own branded smartphone Nexus One to knock the wind out of Apple's uber-cool iPhone.

And, though details of the impending Google tablet is still enshrouded in mystery, we won't be surprised if HTC is tapped to make the Google device, just as it has produced a large number of smartphones that run on Google's Android OS, including the famous Nexus One.
