Toyota recalls four models to correct ABS program

Car giant Toyota is recalling 223,000 cars to correct the software program that controls the antilock braking system.

The system is used in the 'Prius', 'Prius Plug-in Hybrid', 'Sai' and 'HS250h' sold in Japan.

A hydraulic braking system and a regenerative braking system work in unison in ordinary driving conditions.

But it said drivers of the four models may experience reduced braking performance when the vehicles switch at low speed to hydraulic braking-only to activate ABS, which is used to stabilise handling on slippery surfaces, such as snowy and icy roads.

Applying increased pressure to the brake pedal when ABS is activated will produce the intended braking performance.

Toyota said it has undertaken the recall in the interest of ensuring customer confidence.

Worldwide, Toyota has sold about 400,000 of the vehicles subject to the recall announced in Japan.

The company will take remedial measures as soon as possible in the United States, Europe and other regions.
