Inflation calculation set to include Blu Ray, PSP and Hair stylers

15 March 2010 @ 05:26 pm BST

The CPI and RPI which monitor prices of 'everyday' goods, is now going to use more 'modern' blu-ray players and PSP's instead of disposable cameras and squash hires, as a way of generating figures of 'inflation'.

The ONS (Office of National Statistics) changes the products it monitors annually to better reflect public spending.

It tries to use newer and more common spending habits in a 650 product basket that it analyses using 180,000 price quotations of these items across 150 areas in the UK.

These are then used to calculate the 'indexes' CPI and RPI giving us an indication of how much inflation/deflation there is.

This year, the fizzy drinks can has been replaced by bottled minerals, whilst jars of baby food are taken out for powdered formula milk.

The most recent changes however, reflect a greater technology quotient, which includes blu-ray players and handheld computer games, instead of squash hire and disposables - something which has also faded due to increasing use of mobiles as digital cameras.

"Lipgloss was also exchanged for lipstick" the ONS said.

Electric hair stylers were also used, as advances in its usage was reflected in the outgoing hair dryer that it was replacing.
