With every Paris Fashion week, comes the opportunity for designers across the globe to show off their latest awe-inspiring designs.

Inevitably, some will rise stylishly to the challenge and leave the world mesmerised with their sophisticated collections, while others will fall flat and be left to drown their sorrows in flat champagne.

Either way, the saying "Fashion is fickle" could not be more appropriate.

Lebanese designer Elie Saab emerged victorious this week after unveiled a range of exquisite ball gowns as part of his spring/summer 2012 haute couture collection in Paris.

The 47-year-old designer showcased a collection of opulent designs using key colours including creamy yellow, soft rose pink, mint green and peach throughout the range.

Meanwhile, Jean Paul Gaultier appeared to make a monumental fail with his Amy Winehouse inspired collection, which was unveiled on the six month anniversary of the tragic singer's death and hit all the wring notes.

The 59-year-old French designer had no luck on his home tuff with his collection, complete with beehives, exposed bra straps, and Fred Perry collars.

His show made for uncomfortable and confusing viewing and lacked the style and elegance of his previous collections.

After a week of more bright neon colours, earthy tones, and extravagant designs than a drag queens wardrobe, we have a look at some of the hits and misses so far this season.
