Israel accused Iran of being behind the bombings, following the two bomb scares in New Delhi and Tlibisi in Georgia the previous day.

Israel's defence minister, Ehud Barak, who was in Bangkok two days before the blasts, said the latest attacks "prove once again that Iran and its proxies continue to perpetrate terror".

The cause of the blasts remains unclear but Thai police blamed the three explosions on a foreigner.

A picture posted on Twitter purportedly showed an injured man lying on a pavement outside a Thai school. His legs appeared to have been blown off following one of the explosions.

The man is now said to be receiving emergency treatment in hospital.

"The police have control of the situation. It is thought that the suspect might be storing more explosives inside his house," a police spokesman said.

Thai TV reports suggested the injured man was seen carrying explosives. They said a satchel containing an identification card indicated the man may be of Iranian descent.

Police said one blast took place at the house the injured man rented with other Iranians.

They also said one of his housemates threw a bomb at a taxi in the capital.

Police colonel Sittiphab Baiprasert said the blasts happened about 100 yards apart on Sukhumvit 71, a busy multi-lane street which is home to businesses and apartment buildings, AP reported.
