A few years ago we would have had trouble distributing or sharing photographs gleefully captured on expensive smartphones and tablets.

Today, however, a plethora of photo-sharing apps means it only takes a few second to share all your photos with the world at large. The market for apps that allow you do just this is a booming one, with a number of such apps being developed.

The big question, though, and one you want to ask yourself before you commit precious memory space on your gadget (or worse still, money) to any one, is - is it worth it?

  • Instagram - Instagram is a free photo-sharing app with an easy-to-use range of filters. Photographs can be shared by being uploaded to a number of integrated social networking Web sites, including Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare. The app is designed for both the iOS and the Android softwares. The features of the app vary depending on the platform. The app, in an iOS device, can work with first generation iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 whereas for Android, the app only works with version 2.2 and above (those that support OpenGL ES 2). The updated version of the app for iOS - 2.2.1 - has fixes for e-mail sharing and fixes other bug. Similarlly, the updated version for Android - v1.0.3 - supports tablets and Wi-Fi enabled handsets, as well as those running on the NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip.
  • Photobucket - The app was developed as a free download and can run on both the iOS and Android platforms. Photo albums can be shared, in Photobucket, as photos, videos and albums, through Facebook and Twitter. The iOS version is compatible with the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch, while an updated Android version fixes local bugs.
  • Trendyful Camera - The app is developed by Sivola for iOS users and is a free download. It is compatible with the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad. The app allows users to share photographs and videos on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+, Flickr and by e-mail. The updated version of the app - 1.1 - allows users to transfer images from the iPhone to any device like a computer, smartphones and tablets. The updated version is powered by Dropbox, which helps users share folders to share with family and friends.
  • Path - This is a free app developed for botht the iOS and Android platforms. The iOS version of the app is compatible with the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch and supports languages like English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. The app allows users to share high quality photos and videos to suchs as Twitter, Foursquare, Tumblr and Facebook. The Android version of the free app has been re-imagined with a new design. The updated version of the app for Android features enhanced privacy, bug fixes.
  • EyeEm - This is a free app developed by EYE'EM, for both iOS and Android. It boasts 14 photo filters and a real-time photo search engine. The iOS version of the app is compatible with the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad.
