Eight Attacking Options on Liverpool's Summer Transfer Wish-List
Liverpool's struggles in front of goal this season have been well documented and manager Kenny Dalglish will be on the look out for an additional striker to bolster the club's attacking threat in the summer transfer window.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Fulham was Liverpool's fourth home loss of the campaign but perhaps crucially it was also the 12th match in which they have failed to score.
Liverpool would be fourth if all shots that hit the woodwork (31) were counted as goals and they have managed a miserly 43 goals in 35 league games.
If Dalglish is given the funds to invest in the squad in the close season he will be free to overhaul a goal-shy attack and former club stalwart Jan Molby has implored the manager to invest in an out-and-out goal scorer.
"Once is unlucky, twice is unfortunate, three times is careless. But Liverpool FC's goal scoring problems have gone beyond that," Molby told the Liverpool Echo.
"It's a real worry, and it needs to be addressed during the summer months. Kenny Dalglish will know that more than anybody.
"It won't be cheap. Goalscorers tend to be expensive, and they are in short supply. But they are out there. Liverpool need one."
With this in mind, IBTimes Sports takes a look at the players Liverpool will be keeping tabs on in the upcoming transfer window.
1 || Gaston Ramirez
Liverpool are rumoured to have submitted a £16.3m offer for Bologna midfielder Gaston Ramirez, according to the player’s agent Pablo Bentacur.
The 21-year-old signed a new deal with the Serie A side earlier this season and has scored eight goals in 32 league games.
“Bologna have received an offer near to 20million euros from an important club in the Premier League,” Bentacur was quoted in the Daily Mail.
“Bologna will decide at the end of the season what they are going to do.”
2 || Gonzalo Higuain
Liverpool’s profligacy in front of goal has been well document this season. Dalglish’s side have managed to score just 43 goals in 36 matches and the Scot will be on the lookout for a new frontman over the summer.
According to former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, Dalglish must sign Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain to solve their golascoring problems.
"If the Reds had someone who could convert the countless chances they have created then the team would be a lot further up the table," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"I don't know who the club may have in mind but I like the look of Gonzalo Higuain at Real Madrid. He doesn't play an awful lot at the Bernabeu but he would be brilliant for us.
"But would he come? Would Real release him? And how much would be cost?"
Despite not being first choice at the Bernabeu, Higuain has scored 22 goals in 33 La Liga appearances for Jose Mourinho's league champions.
3 || Iker Muniain
Muniain is another youngster on Dalglish’s radar after the Athletic Bilbao forward scored against Manchester United earlier this season.
The 19-year-old, who has a £29.5m buy-out clause, impressed as the Basque club knocked United out of the Europa League in April.
Muniain has also been linked with United but his representative, Jesus Medina, said Bilbao were unlikely to sell their star for less than his release clause.
Medina told Calciomercato.com: “Athletic do not want to sell. Whoever wants him must pay his buyout clause at €36million (£29.5million).”
4 || Luuk de Jong
Liverpool continue to monitor FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong but face competition from up to 15 other clubs, according to the player's agent Luis Laros.
The 21-year-old has scored 27 goals for his club this season as they vie to win the Eredivisie title for a second time under former England boss Steve McClaren.
De Jong has two years remaining on his current deal and is expected to feature prominently for Holland during this summer’s European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.
His agent Laros told Voetbal International: "Liverpool are following Luuk closely. But so are 15 other clubs.
"Three big clubs that have qualified for the Champions League preliminaries have told us that they are ready to open talks with Twente.
"We will keep our eyes and ears open in the next few weeks. Luuk is feeling very well at Twente, but if the club fails to qualify for Europe, staying put is a less attractive option."
5 || Olivier Giroud
Dalglish travelled to France to watch Montpellier’s Olivier Giroud earlier in April, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich also interested in the forward.
Giroud, who has scored 21 goals in 33 games for the Ligue 1 frontrunners, is valued at close to £50m but is believed to have a release clause of around £13m.
6 || Rasmus Elm
AZ Alkmaar midfielder Rasmus Elm has been linked with a move to Merseyside since January, after the 24-year old scored 10 goals in 17 Eredivisie appearances this season.
The £8m-rated player will enter the last 12 months of his contract this summer but he insists he will not start thinking about his future until after Euro 2012.
“I want to play as well as possible and will start thinking about my future after the Euros,” Elm told De Telegraaf. “When the focus on playing is gone, I can start thinking about my future. I’ve got one year left on my contract here at Alkmaar and I don’t have to leave.”
And Alkmaar technical director Earnie Stewart remains hopeful the Denmark international will remain at the club beyond the end of his current deal: 'We want to keep him for longer. I'm very hopeful he'll stay.'
7 || Gylfi Sigurdsson
Liverpool are keeping tabs on the Iceland star after his impressive run of form for Swansea since joining on-loan from Hoffenheim in January.
The 22-year-old has scored seven goals in 16 games for Brendan Rodgers’ side and Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United are reportedly interested in acquiring his services over the summer.
The £10m-rated Sigurdsson told Sky Sports he’s eager to remain in the Premier League but cautioned he had yet to receive an offer to extend his stay.
“I’m not worried about my future,” he said. “My thoughts haven’t changed. I’ve told them [Hoffenheim] what I want to do next season and that’s play in the Premier League.
“Hopefully things can get sorted in the summer. I don’t know what will happen. We’ll have to wait and see.”
8 || Victor Moses
Liverpool are weighing up an approach for the Wigan midfielder after he signalled his intention to leave the DW Stadium in the summer.
Moses has one year left on his current deal but has informed manager Roberto Martinez that he will not sign a contract extension and could be allowed to leave the club at the end of the season.
And his agent, Tony Finnigan, believes a number of Premier League sides will be interested in his client this summer.
“This is how it works here (in England),” Finnigan was quoted in the Daily Mail.
“Victor Moses has just a year left on his contract with Wigan Athletic and we were about to start talks on the extension when he said he does not want to sign a new deal.
“Victor Moses has played himself into a position where virtually every club in the Premier League want to sign him.
“All of the Premier League clubs will be strengthening in the summer and we are not surprised that Moses has been linked with virtually every team in the top division.”
