''If someone had told me beforehand that I'd win the title here against probably the greatest player of all time, I would not have believed it,'' said Haas, who has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the world but struggled with injuries.

Haas, who was the oldest player in the draw, was 2-10 against Federer coming into the match, with both of his wins coming more than 10 years ago when both men were just starting their careers.

For Haas, it was his second title at the event; he beat Novak Djokovic in the final in 2009.

Federer was looking for his sixth title at the Gerry Weber Open, having gone 5-1 in previous finals at the tournament. His only other loss came in 2010 to Lleyton Hewitt.
