Murray Eases Through as Robson Stuns Clijsters in US Open Second Round

Andy Murray made short work of Ivan Dodig as he secured a straight-sets victory to advance to the third round of the US Open for the seventh consecutive year.

While Murray was expected to ease through, his doubles partner at the recent London Olympics,  Laura Robson, was expected to struggle against three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters.

With Clijsters announcing that she would retire from singles competition after the tournament, there were few that expected Robson to overcome the Belgian, but she produced some fantastic tennis to earn arguably her biggest victory to date.

The British number three managed to overpower Clijsters as she secured a 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) victory in a little over two hours on the famous Arthur Ashe court.

"It was such a good atmosphere," said Robson. "I didn't have any expectations because she's so experienced.

"I've had so many tough matches against top players that I knew the level was there, I just had to keep it for the whole match.

"Kim has been such a great player for so many years and a role model for all the younger girls coming up."

After a well deserved victory it does not get any easier for Robson who now faces ninth seed Li Na in the third round.

Meanwhile, Murray will be hoping he can progress far beyond the third round after he put in an impressive display to beat the unseeded Croatian 6-2 6-1 6-3 in a match which lasted less than two hours.

"I thought I played well," said Murray. "There were a lot of long rallies. I moved my feet pretty well. They were definitely easier conditions to play in, compared with the other day when it was windy.

"I served better. I've got a couple of days to work on some things and I've got to get used to playing in the day, so I'll get out there in the heat."

The Scot will now face a Spaniard in the third round, when he meets either Pablo Andujar or Feliciano Lopez for a place in the final 32.
