Thousands of visitors to the Angeles National Forest in California were evacuated when a wildfire broke out in the East Fork San Gabriel Canyon off State Route 39 Sunday.
Many campgrounds, which attracted thousands visitors on the Labor Day weekend, were evacuated following the blaze which originated half-way between Camp Williams and the Shooting Range along East Fork Road at 2:30 p.m.
The wildfire sent a huge cloud of smoke which could be seen from many parts of the Los Angeles basin.
The blaze spread to 1000 acres by 8:00 pm, the Los Angeles Times reported, quoting John Wagner, an assistant public affairs officer for the forest service.
About 300 firefighters were attempting to control the fire with the help of four helicopters and nine airtankers, according to InciWeb.
There was no report of damage to the recreational facilities in the area or injury to the visitors.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
