The 31-year-old superstar is said to be the star attraction to take to the stage during the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show in February. The Super Bowl will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Associated Press said that an official announcement is expected imminently.

The Grammy award-winning diva is a Super Bowl favourite after singing the national anthem in her hometown of Houston in 2004.

If new mother Beyoncé is named halftime performer, fans could be treated to duets with a host of stars including her husband rapper Jay-Z, her Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, and Lady Gaga.

The Single Ladies hitmaker would follow in the footsteps of Madonna who had the halftime honours earlier this year.

More than 114 million people watched Madge perform with CeeLo Green, Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and M.I.A.

That show became engulfed in scandal after controversial rapper M.I.A. made a rude hand gesture during her live performance.

Notable Super Bowl performers include The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Janet Jackson, and The Black Eyed Peas.
