Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash, which involved a Nissan Note travelling northbound and a Skoda Octavia travelling southbound.

The crash has caused long tailbacks. The A68 in Fala is closed both ways between the B6457 and Laird's Entry.

Local diversions are now in place. Inspector Simon Bradshaw, from the Roads Policing Unit at Lothian and Borders Police, said: "This is a tragic incident, and we are currently in the process of carrying out enquiries in order to establish the full circumstances of the collision.

"At this time I am appealing to anyone who noticed the gold coloured Nissan Note or the silver Skoda Octavia on the A68 this morning, to get in touch."

This crash follows an incident on Sunday on the A697 at Carfraemill - just 10 miles south.

A man and a woman, both in their 50s, were killed in the collision. The woman died at the scene and the man died later in hospital.
