A list of popular retail stores and chains that will be open with holiday hours on New Year's Day 2013.

New Year's Day is a nationally observed holiday in the U.S., with many closures and special store hours for the first day of the new year.

City, county, state and federal government offices, schools, financial markets and post offices will be closed on Jan. 1, 2013. Public transportation in major cities will run on holiday schedules.

However, many national retailers will open their doors at the start of the new year for shoppers to spend their remaining holiday funds. Stores like Best Buy, Target, Apple and Wal-Mart will all have modified store hours on New Year's Day.

Stores, offices and transportation systems will resume normal hours on Jan. 2, 2013, the first official business day of the new year.

But while banks and some small business will be closed on Tuesday, many stores will have normal business hours on New Year's Day. Here's a list of popular stores that will be open on Jan. 1. Be sure to check your local stores to confirm location hours.

Best Buy: Some stores will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.
