Rihanna debuted her first fashion collection at the London Fashion Week. The 24-year-old singer's Rihanna for River Island creation took to the catwalk at the Old Sorting Office.

The collection had a largely casual and bold tone, with heavy use of different patterns of crop tops, and layers of monochrome stripes, denim, thigh-high slits and boots. The catwalk was an impressive piece of design as well - it was a five-tiered creation that allowed as many looks to be simultaneously on display. Rihanna was joined by costume designer Adam Selman at the event.

"This collection is based upon Ri's style and her mood - so it's evolved a lot," Selman told Vogue, "There were things that she couldn't find in the shops - for example simple, black, beautiful dresses, so she created her own. She was really interested in how things sit on the models and how they're cut. This all comes from her - it's very personal. She's at the top of her game right now in terms of her career and in herself. She's in a really good place."

Selman also spoke of the collection as "urban-inspired, unfussy with a hint of uptown" and said it was aimed at "cool hip girls who aren't super thin".

The Diamonds singer courted controversy before the show, when she posted a photograph of a bouquet of marijuana on Valentine's Day. The act reportedly placed her £800,000 contract with River Island in serious trouble; the high-street franchise was clearly unwilling to deal with such negative publicity before the launch.

Other A-list celebrities present at the show included models Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn and singer/songwriter Mollie King.

Rihanna's collection is expected to be available in the UK, the US and Japan in the first week of March.
