A newborn baby, which was rushed to hospital after it was born outdoors in bitter temperature, was declared dead until two police officers in charge of looking after the infant's body found that the baby was moving.
The incident began when a 20-year-old woman fell ill and was on her way to Humber River Hospital along with her mother Sunday morning. While they were walking on the street to the hospital that was located only 500 meters away, she went into labor and delivered her baby on the side walk.
The chilly morning's temperature had dropped below -15C overnight after the city had been warned of an extreme weather.
Paramedics arrived at the scene after the woman called 911. The newborn along with the mother was rushed to the hospital. The baby was declared dead on arrival after a failed attempt by medical staffs to revive the infant and was covered with a sheet.
Two officers guarded the body while the coroner was on his way. The officers saw the sheet move and checked the baby's pulse. They discovered that the baby was alive.
The infant is now at a stable condition along with its mother, Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond told The Star.
