Wisconsin authorities announced the closure of one its most popular beaches due to sex orgies and drug abuse on the sand bar and in surrounding woods.

The public beach that has been a hotspot for nudists from around the country for decades, will be shut down on weekdays with immediate effect, authorities announced.

Bob Morton, executive director of the Austin, Tex.-based Naturist Action Committee, which lobbies on behalf of nudists criticised the DNR for not consulting with the beachgoers before closing the area, ABC reported.

"Honestly, we're on their side when it comes to enforcing things that are lewd and lascivious," Morton said. "There's something to be said about consulting the users of the place. There's got to be more to this somewhere."

Nate Kroeplin, the supervisor of the law enforcement by DNR in Dane County, said that even though it is sad to close down the beach on weekdays, it needed to be done because the ongoing activities on the beach were making it uncomfortable for many people to visit the area. Weekdays are the main culprit since that's when the beach has fewer visitors to police each other's behaviour.

The beach has been a difficultt area for wardens to look after for many years with droves of nudists claiming the beach as their own.

Along with the nudity, also came sex and drugs the authorities had to close the area at night and ban beach camping in the late 1990s.

Many other attempts made by the authorities such as cutting down the woods around the area of the beach have proved futile .

"It's pretty incredible to see the amount of traffic that pulls onto the property," Kroeplin said. "Everything we've done has not made any difference."
