A British family has been found shot dead on the Spanish coastal area Costa del Sol.

The family of three, believed to be a couple and their daughter, who was in her 20s, were found dead this morning (Thursday).

Their bodies were discovered by the landlord of the rented apartment in Mijas, a town in the province of Malaga on the southwest coast of Spain.

Police said there was no sign of a struggle in the apartment.

The Foreign Office said the matter was being investigated. "We are aware of reports and are urgently looking into it," it said.

The Guardia Civil spokesman in Madrid said: "We have found three deceased and we are almost sure they are British.

"We are waiting for information from the judicial police at the scene.

"We are led to believe there were two adults and one younger person."

According to Spanish news website Cadena Ser, the daughter had Down's syndrome and the family had lived in Mijas for several years.

The victims have not been named.
