A woman has been killed after three generations of the same family were shot in a Turkish holiday resort.

Catherine Bury, 56, was shot dead while celebrating her birthday in Dalyan on the country's southwest coast.

Her mother Cecile, 87, and 24-year-old son Alex were also shot. They were reported as being in a serious condition in hospital.

The gunman is believed to be a 46-year-old gardener at the family's holiday villa, identified only by his initials VA.

It is reported that the family, from Northallerton, North Yorkshire, had complained about the gardener to the police after he allegedly made death threats to the mother following an argument.

He was arrested and held overnight. He then allegedly returned to the villa armed with a shotgun.

Catherine Bury, also known as Anne, died after being shot four times in the bathroom of the villa. Her mother recieved a gunshot wound to the back and was taken to hospital in Fethiye, while her son was shot in the leg and received treatment at Mugla University Hospital.

The gardener later gave himself up to police and is due to appear in court.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the death of a British national in Turkey.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
