Wales' injury crisis could see them make Liverpool academy player Harry Wilson their youngest ever player in either of the World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Belgium.

Of the 23 players originally selected by manager Chris Coleman, 15 have withdrawn through injury with six uncapped players called up including 16 year old Wilson.

The Liverpool winger, who has featured once for the club's Under-21 side, will break Gareth Bale's record as the youngster ever Wales international should he feature in either qualifier. Wilson has spoken of his shock at being called up.

"I was playing for Liverpool on Tuesday and yesterday was a recovery day so I was having a lie in," said Wilson.

"I had three missed calls on my phone. It was then that I found out I'd been called up to the Wales first team squad. I checked with a few people, including my mum and dad and they said go for it.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the whole of the Wales squad - Bellamy, Ramsey although I don't think Gareth Bale will be there."

Wilson had originally impressed Coleman while playing for the Wales Under-17's against Hungary, Scotland and Slovenia but could make the rapid step up to the senior team this week.

He joined Liverpool aged eight and has impressed in the club's youth academy, scoring a stunning goal against Stoke City for the Under-18's.

Despite being able to boast an impressive group of young emerging players, Coleman is forced to reflect on a World Cup qualifying campaign which has failed to get off the ground and the manager is pensive ahead of the climax to a dismal spell in charge.

"We've got to concentrate on Friday night and try and achieve a result that's the biggest thing. I'm here until the end of the campaign," Coleman said. "I will never ever walk from this job even if we are doing brilliant.

"Whether I like it or we like it or not you are always judged on results. Simple as that. I don't think it's the time or place to talk about that we've got to concentrate on Friday night playing Macedonia and try to receive a result. That's the biggest thing. I've said before I am here until the end of the campaign."
