Australia has won the first Ashes test at Brisbane by 381 runs with a day in hand as they bowled England out in a rain plagued day. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 26 as Australia take a 1-0 lead in the five game series.

Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the bowlers for hosts in the final innings, picking up five wickets at an economy rate of less than two. Australia's win sets up the series nicely and England has to be at their best when they travel to the Adelaide Oval on December 5.

The England batsmen failed to get a move on, as was the case in the first innings and succumbed to a score of runs with Alastair Cook top scoring with 65. The England captain, who came into the test with a 3-0 series victory in the reverse set of fixtures cut a forlorn figure as he walked out of the field after being dismissed by Nathan Lyon. Only three batsmen from the rest 10 were able to get into double figures and the captain needs a rethink of his current line-up if they have to retain the Ashes this time around.

Earlier, Australia made 295 runs in the first innings after a brilliant performance with the bat from Brad Haddin(94) and Mitchell Johnson(64). In reply, England went from being 82/2 to being bowled out for 136, handing a 159 run lead to the hosts. Michael Carberry top scored with 40 while Stuart Broad cored a solid 32 to take England over the 100 run mark.

Australia started their second innings where they left off in the first, with Michael Clarke (113) and David Warner (124) scoring centuries to take Australia to 401 and giving England 560 runs to chase.
