NATO troops in Afghanistan opened fire on protesting crowds on Friday over pastor Terry Jones' plan to burn copies of Koran on Saturday commemorating 9/11 attacks.
More than 10,000 people assembled on Friday morning to protest the act and some of them had hurled stones at a NATO base run by Germans. When the troops opened fire, one protester was killed, said a NATO spokesman.
On Thursday, Jones said he had suspended the plan to burn copies commemorating 9/11 attacks and sought clear promise by Muslim leaders to shift the planned mosque near Ground Zero in New York.
Jones heads Dove World Outreach Centre church in the Florida town of Gainesville and his plan drew global outrage from presidents and prime ministers, including a swift response from President Barack Obama who said it could lead to "recruitment bonanza for al-Qaeda" and provoke more suicide bombings.

Even the mosque plan has triggered opposition from many Americans who say it is insensitive to families of the victims of the Sept 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
