India kick-started their Asia Cup campaign by registering a six-wicket victory against Bangladesh on Wednesday. The hosts posted a total of 279 runs in the opening innings of the game with the loss of seven wickets. Mohammed Shami was the star bowler for the world champions, snapping up four wickets including the crucial wicket of rival skipper Mushfiqur Rahim who scored 117 runs.

India's opening batsmen failed to start on a convincing note and Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Rohit Sharma (28) were gone with just 54 runs on the board.

The onus then fell on Virat Kohli (136) to prevent the hosts from pulling off an upset. The skipper combined with Ajinkya Rahane (73) to put up a partnership of 213 runs for the third wicket. After Kohli scored his 19th ODI hundred, Ambati Rayudu (9) and Dinesh Karthik (2) remained unbeaten to chase the target of 280 runs in the 49th over.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka too began the tournament on a winning note on the opening day, defeating Pakistan in the first match. Lahiru Thirimanne's (102) century combined with Kumar Sangakkara (67) and Angelo Mathews' (55) cameo knocks, helped the Lankans post a total of 296 runs in 50 overs having lost six wickets.

Lasith Malinga couldn't impose himself on the game until the defending champions had lost five wickets. The fast bowler then snapped up the remaining five wickets to prevent Misbah-ul-Haq's side from achieving the target as they ran out of wickets in the 49th over for a total of 284 runs.
