Athletic Bilbao fell to a 2-1 defeat against Sporting Gijon in their opening league match of the season at El Molinon. The Basque club have lost their last four encounters with Barcelona.

Defender Mikel San Jose suffered a knock in the Gijon match and is doubtful for the visit of Barcelona. Mikel Balenziaga is likely to play with a protective mask after suffering a facial injury at El Molinon.

Champions Barcelona followed up their Spanish Super Cup triumph over Sevilla by beating Real Betis 6-2 at home in their first La Liga match. The Catalan giants have won their last six La Liga matches.

Andres Iniesta, Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu all remain sidelined for the visitors.

Ernesto Valverde: "We made too many costly mistakes [against Sporting Gijon], especially in the second half. The key to the game was the two goals we conceded in three minutes at the start of the second half. I always expect the team to have the attitude we showed in the first half. The mistakes we made weren't normal. Starting the season with a defeat has a price because it forces you to make up the ground you lost on the opening day, plus we face Barcelona on Sunday, but we'll be up for it."

Luis Enrique: "It was a perfect game [against Real Betis], both on a football and emotional level. The players came out with more ambition and enthusiasm than ever before. We were brave and effective, and I only remember a few games when our opponents put us under so little danger. It was a complete performance, and at this stage of the season it's difficult."
