Fernando Torres

9:48: A drab evening of football comes to an end and this fixture remains poised just as it was at the start of the evening.

FULL TIME

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Chelsea

9:41: Costa does well to work space after failing to take another long ball into his stride. With Turan running into space down the right flank, Costa looks inside and instead opts to curl one on goal. It's another dismal effort however that sails horribly wide. He's had a poor evening.

9:40: Costa close again! After more pressure Gabi dinks another inviting ball over the top that Costa leaps onto, but again it's lacking any real direction and is calmly collected by Schwarzer.

9:39: Into five minutes of extra time.

9:37: Torres, who has been a useful outlet all evening, cleverly drags the ball past Miranda on the edge of the Atletico box and is taken down, winning a free kick. David Luiz wins the argument to take it, but it's whacked over the bar.

9:34: Costa attempts another overhead kiclk. It's even worse than his first effort.

9:33: Juanfran, rushing back into his own box to dispossess Torres madly attempts a Cryuff turn with Chelsea shirts nearby. His blushes are spared as Godin brings the ball wide before cutting back to Courtois who clears.

9:31: Costa takes Koke's pass on the chest and attempts a bicycle kick on goal on the edge of his own area, but it's a bit rubbish.

9:28: Gabi finds Juanfran who swings in another excellent cross in from the right that Koke leaps above Azpilicueta to meet, but he nods wide. Moments later it's the same play from Atleti as Juanfran's cross finds Raul Garcia who gets too much on it and nods over. Chelsea are doing well to put the opposition under pressure in situations like this, but Atletico's attempts to test Schwarzer has been abject this evening.

9:25: Mark Schwarzer streches down to his near post to palm away Gabi's effort! It may have taken a deflection on the way through but it needed a hand to it.

9:22: Frank Lampard drops a shoulder as he attempts to take the ball under his control in his own third but it seems to touch his arm in the process. Atletico wants the Chelsea midfielder to be shown a second yellow but in the ensuing shouting and pushing amonst both teams the referee shows a yellow to Mikel and Gabi, both who will now miss the second leg, and awards Atletico a free kick 25 yards from goal.

9:20: Andre Schurrle is on for Terry.

9:18: Mikel concedes a corner that Schwarzer easily collects, but Terry is left struggling in the aftermath. Replays suggest the Blues skipper stepped on the foot of David Luiz before rolling on his ankle. He's on the sidelines as Luiz slots back into centre half.

9:15: Azpilicueta does well to hold off Costa just inside his box before the home side swing another cross in looking for their striker. Mikel is across again to make an important header.

9:13: Lampard is shown a yellow card for a crunching tackle on Arda Turan and he will miss the return leg back in London.

9:11: Juanfran's cross from right is blocked by the hand of Lampard. Atletico try to get it into the box first time but it's hacked clear. Simeone's side then opt to pass their way into the box but again the Chelsea wall holds firm. Willian attempts to relieve the pressure but he loses possession but another Atleti cross swung into the box this time finds Costa in an offside position.

9:08: A loose ball bounces up nicely for Diego but his half volley swerves just wide of goal. It's his last action of the evening as Diego, whose persistent efforts from range this evening have been relatively poor, is off and on comes Arda Turan.

9:06: Torres jinks his way passed his man on the inside left channel beofre dropping a shoulder and cutting past another. It's neat work from the former Atletico captain but his dipping shot lands in the arms of Courtois.

9:04: Torres and Ramires work the ball well down the right and draw a corner. Cahill is wrestled to the ground as the corner is swung in and the referee pulls up play to investigate. No action is taken however and after all that, Lampard's second consecutive corner is a harmless one.

9:01: Gabi dinks a hopeful ball into the box and Schwarzer rushes forward to make the punch. It's a poor one, however, as Diego picks up the ball on the edge of the area and after shifting onto his right foot, shoots for goal. The Chelsea shot stopper is well placed to make the save however with Cole and Terry back on the line just in case.

8:58: David Luiz is down after being lightly brushed by the shoulder of Diego. A bit of shoving between the two sides ensues but the excitement is soon dispelled and we are back to tedium.

8:54: Koke swings an inviting ball into the box where Diego Costa is jostling for space but Mikel is across to make an important aerial interception. Raul Garcia rushes to collect the loose ball on the edge of the area but impedes Cahill en route and a free kick is given Chelsea's way.

Moments before that Lampard connected with a volley on the edge of the Atletico area but it was easily collected by Courtois.

8:51: WAKE UP! Chelsea get us started for the second half.

8:37: A very dull half draws to a close. Chelsea have largely contained Atletico who have fallen short in the final third so far. The away side have offered nothing of note in terms of their own efforts on goal but they don't care.

HALF TIME

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Chelsea

8:34: Torres cleverly wins the ball ahead of Godin before being fouled by the centre half and Chelsea have a free kick on the left hand corner of Atleti's box. Luiz stands over as Cahill and Terry roll forward but his strike is blocked at the first time of asking.

8:33: Atletico work the ball across goal and Diego again opts to fire on goal. His low effort takes a slight bounce on its way through to goal but Schwarzer is firmly behind it.

8:32: Four minutes of extra time added on.

8:30: Juanfran again supplies the cross from the right and Mikel is forced to head over his own bar. Koke takes the resutling corner but Lampard cleared. Approaching the end of the 45 here, but expect a fair bit of time added on after Cech's injury.

8:27: Juanfran floats a deep cross into the Chelsea box that Costa follows to the far post before controlling on his chest and firing on goal. It's terrific defending from Azpilicueta however who makes the important block to deny the Brazilian-born striker. Atletico want penalty for handball and the referee correctly waves them away.

8:24: Torres scampers down the right flank and wins a corner kick for his side, but Courtois is called into action to cleanly catch the resulting corner.

8:20: A rare moment of excitement as Diego cuts a ball back infield that Mario Suarez hits beautifully. It swerves towards dangerously close to Schwarzer's left hand post and the Austrian has to make the save and is even more chuffed to see a goal kick has been awarded.

8:17: Koke again finds space on the left and floats a ball into the box where Raul Garcia's height advantage over Ashley Cole is being expoited. The midfielder can't get the right connection however and his header flies well over the bar.

8:14: Willian picks up a stray ball on the edge of his own area and bursts forward. Juanfran nips across to block him but slips, allowing the Brazilian to burst through the middle before sliding a ball through to Ramires on the right. Chelsea are suddenly two on one with Torres breaking inside the right of the box, but Ramires cross/shot is woeful in the end, and the chance is gone.

8:12: David Luiz fails to deal with a simple clearance allowing Raul Garcia to poke a hopeful ball through for Costa, but he has veered marginally offside.

8:10: Chelsea have a corner of their own and there is a moment of panic for Atletico as Courtois fails to claim the ball that is met by the head of Gary Cahill, whose attempt is cleared off the line. It initially looked like unconvincing goalkeeping from the 21-year-old Belgian, but replays shot John Obi Mikel had him locked in a bear hug. A minor infraction.

8:07: As for the resulting corner after all that, it's wasted as Atletico surprisingly opt for a short corner and Felipe Luis' deep cross floats out for a goal kick.

8:06: Replays suggest David Luiz shoved Raul Garcia who then collided into Cech who left the pitch holding his ribs. Jose Mourinho looked furious in the side lines.

8:04: It's not good for Chelsea, physio Eva Carneiro signals Cech has to come off and Mark Schwarzer is on for the Blues.

8:02: It's swung into the Chelsea box and Cech is forced to palm the ball over the bar. Worrying scenes for the Blues though as Cech is down and immediately signals something is wrong after Raul Garcia appeared to collide with the Blues shot stopper.

8:00: Chelsea have their first period of possession, drawing deafening boos from those in attendance around the Vicente Calderon. It pays off as Azpilicueta gives away a throw in and Atletico have the ball back, forcing a corner.

7:57: Diego returns a ball to Koke on the left and his cross is swung into the dangerous zone, but it is out of the reach of Costa who can't bring the ball down. Prior to that, Costa and Terry went head to head after a coming together between the two. The Atletico striker looked genuinely terrifying as he pushed away the Chelsea (and probably his future) skipper.

7:54: It's been a cagey start, as you may have expected. Gabi and Raul Garcia have attemped to impose themselves in the middle of the park early doors and Diego has attempted a couple of efforts from range but nothing for Petr Cech to worry about yet.

7:51: Frank Lampard hooks a long ball upfield but Torres doesn't bother chasing it down as he trots back from an offside position. At the other end Ashley Cole catches Raul Garcia who looks like he may need some treatment but is back up on his foot soon enough.

7:48: Diego Costa picks up possession and elegantly controls the ball in a pocket of space on the inside right channel and dinks the ball back to Diego. The Brazilian scored a spectacular long range drive against Barcelona in the previous round but this effort is screwed harmlessly wide.

7:45: And Atletico get us started; it's deafening around the Vicente Calderon.

7:40: We are approaching kick off at an electric Vicente Calderon. The home side are lined up in the tunnel but are yet to be joined by Chelsea.

7:33: How difficult a proposition are Diego Simeone's side, then? At the Vicente Calderon the La Liga leaders boast the best defensive record in the league and have lost just three games all season. What's more, they are the only side still in the Champions League with their undefeated run still intact. While Jose Mourinho may have sent out a side looking to contain the opposition tonight, he will have to start considering how his side can find a way through this formidable Atletico team over two legs.

7:25: With John Obi Mikel, David Luiz, Ramires and Willian all deployed in midfield positions, it looks like Jose Mourinho will be content with holding Atletico this evening. The Blues also have Marco van Ginkel avaliable on the bench as the Dutchman continues his return from a cruciate ligament injury.

7:15: Atletico are aiming to reach their first final since 1974 while Chelsea are pursuing their third since 2008. A couple of stray tackles or the red mist descending could rob a handful of key players of the chance to do that, however. Four players from each side are one more booking away from a suspension with David Luiz, Frank Lampard, John Mikel Obi and Willian from the Chelsea end, while Atleti quartet Koke, Gabi, Juanfran and Emiliano Insua biding to keep their tempers in check.

7:11: La Liga leaders Atletico are at full strengtth with Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois cleared to start in goal for the club as Arda Turan returns to the bench alongside David Villa.

7:09: Ashley Cole returns for his first start since January as Cesar Azpiliceuta is moved to the right hand side of defence. Fernando Torres starts up front against his boyhood club ahead of an ttacking trio of Ramires, Willian and Frank Lampard in a more advanced position.
