Overview

Federer beat Goffin in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to schedule an encounter against Berdych as he looks to win his first Grand Slam tournament since taking the Wimbledon in 2012. The number three seed made easy work of his opponent, finishing the first two sets in only 50 minutes, before dealing the killer blow in the third set.

The first set was over in 21 minutes, with Federer hitting three aces and losing only three service points to get a major psychological advantage going into the next round. The second set was a breeze for the Swiss, with Goffin conceding that he was overwhelmed after playing in the Rod Laver Arena for the first time in his career. It was a humbling moment for the world number 25, who had posters of Federer on his wall growing up.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Berdych defeated world number 24, Roberto Bautista Agut, to progress into the quarters. It was an evenly contested match with Berdych coming up on top in five sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Berdych struck 68 winners in the game, which lasted three hours and 18 minutes. It was a good test of the Czech Republic international's mettle, who made a come back after losing the first set to win the next two.
