Overview

Group D leaders Wales take on second-placed Austria in Vienna on Thursday. They are currently only separated on account of the Welsh having a superior goal difference, but with only the group winner guaranteed an automatic spot – the second-placed team will have to play in the play-off game - in the World Cup, both will be keen to take all three points.

Chris Coleman will be hoping his team can continue their good form from the Euros which saw them reach the semi-final and pull off another coup and make it to their second major tournament in over 50 years. Aaron Ramsey is unavailable due to injury, but Gareth Bale is fit and will lead the line against Austria.

Marcel Koller's side were fancied to at least make it to the knockout phase in the Euros but were knocked out in the group stages following losses to Hungary and surprise package Iceland, who also knocked out England in the round of 16.

Marc Janko

David Alaba, Marko Arnautovic and co will be keen to put the summer behind them and continue their winning momentum in the World Cup qualifiers. Marc Janko is a doubt owing to injury, but the manager could risk the striker owing to the enormity of the clash.

Wales and Austria have faced each other on six occasions with the latter leading the head-to-head 3-2. However, Wales have never beaten their opponents away from home thus far losing on both occasions.

What Managers Say

Chris Coleman [on unlucky away kit]: I am not sure if they will play in red or white, but I can tell you no-one wants to wear our grey kit, I will be happy if I never see that kit again. The red kit is the kit that we will always want to play in and wear, we love being in the red. It is something you look at it. If you are Austrian it is something you would look at, if you know the opposition prefer playing in a certain colour. Portugal made us wear the away kit in the semi-final in the Euros, even though they were in their own away kit. Russia thankfully allowed us to wear red when we beat them, but they could have made us wear grey.

Betting Odds (Betfair)
